Design Process and Iteration Presentation

1 Second Everyday, 2022

In this presentation, I detailed my journey at 1 Second Everyday as their first full-time designer, where I focused on improving user retention through iterative design processes. With 75% of users dropping off before the month mark, we aimed to enhance onboarding to boost retention.

Key Initiatives:

  1. Onboarding Optimization: We identified the onboarding experience as low-hanging fruit for retention improvement. By implementing contextual onboarding, we allowed users to learn by doing, such as recording their first snippet during onboarding. This change led to a significant increase in onboarding completion rates.

  2. User Engagement Strategies: Based on user feedback, we explored alternative onboarding experiences. We introduced features like library access for creating mashes starting January 1, which increased user engagement by showing users their memories and reinforcing that they could add snippets retroactively.

  3. Long-Term Impact: Over a year, our initiatives resulted in a threefold increase in yearly retention and a rise in pro subscriptions. We successfully transitioned the app’s focus from a year-in-review model to a month-in-review format.

  4. Exploration of Gamification and Social Features: Additional opportunities included gamification elements like streaks, stats, and rewards for completing tasks. Although we observed an uptick in retention, quantifying these results proved challenging. We also implemented social features through 1SE Crowds to create accountability and encourage user interaction, further contributing to our retention success.

In conclusion, through user research, iterative testing, and collaboration across teams, we achieved significant improvements in user engagement and retention, ultimately driving growth for the app. I am open to questions or a deeper exploration of another case study in my portfolio.
